A.L. Beck was born in Hamilton, Ontario (“Steel City”) in the early 1970s and raised by their maternal grandparents, who later adopted them when Beck was an adult. A bookish “weird kid” with a quiet, insular childhood, Beck went on to earn three degrees in literature, including a PhD completed while caring for their aging grandparents. Their academic work has explored vampires, Catholicism, Rikki Ducornet, Pre-Raphaelite art, and especially the influence of the Catholic Church on Anne Rice.

Shattered Faith is a contemporary novel about what it means to grow up inside a high-control church and slowly find your way out.

Quinn is a born-in Scientologist in Calgary. The Org above a strip mall is his whole world: it is where he learns, worships, makes friends, and measures his worth. From childhood, he is told that outsiders are dangerous, that good members stay “upstat”, and that doubt is a sign of failure. Sec Checks, Ethics cycles, and “conditions” are presented as help, yet they train him to confess, to watch himself, and to ignore his own instincts.

As Quinn matures, his emerging queer identity clashes with the rules he has been taught to treat as sacred. At the same time, former members and outsiders begin to show him that life beyond Scientology is possible, even if it is frightening.

Set in present-day Calgary, Shattered Faith is not a distant exposé. It is a character-driven story about religious trauma, identity, and the hard work of rebuilding a life that finally belongs to you.
